On the morning of Wednesday November 9th, just after I had put my son Ryan on the bus for school I check my Facebook. I happened to catch a Facebook Live of one of the WKBW Channel 7 reporters coming off of the Skyway on Rt 5. I saw this enormous black cloud rising in the distance. The first thing that went through my head was......wow a house fire really just getting going.....then as the reporter kept traveling down Rt. 5 and the black cloud continued to grow exponentially, I realized that this was a historic fire at the old Bethlehem Steel plant in Lackawanna , NY. At that moment of astonishment I thought to run and grab my DJI Phantom (aka Drone), but then came to the agonizing realization that I did not have any batteries charged. So I put a battery on the charger. And while watching the constant news footage of the ever growing inferno I would check on the status of the battery......it was worse than watching paint dry! After an hour of "watching paint dry" the battery was fully charged and I was off. When I left my front door I could not help but look up and see this giant black cloud hanging over my town. You might have thought there was a really strong lake effect snow storm coming in off of Lake Erie, but it was the smoke from the fire. Lackawanna to Eden 20+ mile and I could see the smoke, I knew I was going to see something historical. After weaving my way through the old city center of Lackawanna (which is pretty neat, albeit run down, but still pretty neat) I got as close as I could to the massive smoke plume. From this point on there are no words that can do this event justice only the video that my tiny little eye in the sky could capture.
